US Military Pullout from Syria: Declaring Victory To Hide Near Total Defeat – 4 – In Its Own “Humanitarian Intervention” Syria Comes To The Aid of Its Kurds – The Kurds, Assad, and Russian Air Support Undermine Erdogan and Trump…

Kurdish female fighters helping to flush ISIS, al Nusra and the like out of Aleppo.
More on Syria…
Having been abandoned “thrown under the bus” so to speak by Trump, the Kurds – all of them – rose to the occasion. So…before asking the Assad government to come defend them against a possible/probable Turkish invasion of N. Syria…different Kurdish factions didn’t go to Washington to plead their case – they went to Moscow. Seeing how quickly that they had been abandoned by the United States (again!!), they turned to the Russians and the Russians delivered in the form of air support to defend the Syrian Army that has just entered the region in response to a Kurdish invitation, derailing – or so it appears – plans for a Turkish invasion.
Watching Erdogan get his political version of blue balls. Couldn’t happen to a nicer s.o.b. Thought he could leverage his one-up-man-ship with Salman over the Kaghossi killing into Turkish territorial expansionism into n. Syria…but has gotten stymied by the Kurds, Assad and the Russians… or as one commentator put it… “the Kurds throw the United States (and Turkey) under the bus.”

What the Kurds wanted from the Russians was some assurances that if Turkey invades N. Syria and they, the Kurds in making their peace with Damascus ,would get support from Russia. Nothing that has followed would have happened without Russian assurances. So the US and Turkey stick it to the Kurds, the Kurds, Syria and Russia stick it to Turkey (and Trump). Can’t keep up with all the changing partners. End result, whether you follow it or not, is quite positive. Unless Turkey wants to press their luck with the Russians – the way Netanyahu did and got burnt – there will be no Turkish incursion. Don’t thank Trump – he had nothing to do with it. Thank Putin and Lavrov.
Russia has certain commitments to defend Syrian sovereignty that includes air support. Russian air support will more than like stay the hand of Erdogan who is fuming at this turn of events ..but at least this is how it seems…he will not go up against Russia… so the Syrian government has extended its sovereignty over northeastern Syria, the impending slaughter of Kurds by Turks seems to have been avoided denying US neocons, Clintonites and the NY Times the pathetic pretext of using them for yet another “humanitarian intervention” – US plans to further complicate the Syrian reality are stymied, US troops will continue to withdraw and …
Arab reactionary (well-chosen word – not “moderate”) leaders are lining up to pay their respects to Assad and re-establish relations with Damascus
Erdogan can stew in his own juices, his political blue balls weighing heavy on him….his Ottoman expansionist vision blunted for the moment. He’ll have to put his Turkish “hard on” map back in the draw…
And…Trumps “visit” to a US base in Iraq has provoked a major wave of opposition to the US military presence – both soldiers and those Eric Prince-like mercenaries. Pressure is mounting in Iraq for them to get the heck out…
And all is well with the world… Merry Christmas and Happy New Year..

Wow, what a wonderful essay to read just before New Years! The first problem of the New Year might be Ukraine; and thank God the Queen of Chaos is not in charge.
Putin hold the aces and plays well. Next in playing well comes Assad. A distant third is Turkey. Iran is the 4th and Trump the last. He holds poor cards and he plays poorly.
